What Happened at the 2022 WTA Linz Open?

The Linz Open wasn’t held in 2022 as the organisers looked to change the dates around to February instead of November when the players are typically exhausted from an entire season of tennis.

Alison Riske won the 2021 edition of the Linz Open by overpowering surprise finalist Jaqueline Cristian in the title-decider. She won 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 to win the tournament after saving a couple of match-points in the final set.

Both semifinals were decided without going the full distance after Riske benefitted from a second set withdrawal of Danielle Collins while Simona Halep opted out of her semifinal against Cristian because of fitness concerns.

Top seeded Aryna Sabalenka overcame the challenge of the second seeded Elise Mertens in the final of the 2020 Linz Open to lift the title for the first time. Sabalenka won 7-5, 6-2.

Earlier in the semifinals, Sabalenka had warded off the threat of Barbora Krejcikova in three sets, while Mertens overcame a set deficit to defeat Ekaterina Alexandrova. Third seeded Dayana Yastremska, seventh seeded Jil Teichmann and eighth seeded Bernarda Pera were all beaten in the first round.

Lucky loser in the qualifiers, Coco Gauff forged a brilliant run at the Linz Open 2019 before going on to clinch the title by beating Jelena Ostapenko in the final in three sets. She faced just one seeded player in the entire tournament but she would be proud with that scalp – the top seeded Kiki Bertens was sent out in straight sets at the quarterfinal stage.

Second seeded Belinda Bencic was dumped out in round one while Donna Vekic, Julia Goerges and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova were all sent packing in the second. Only seeded player to make it to the semifinal was Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Last year’s Linz Open had a surprising finalist in Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Russian went unseeded and came into the competition through the qualifiers.

The favorites to win the tournament and the top seeded players were Julia Görges and Kiki Bertens but both of them were knocked out in the later stages of the tournament. Camila Giorgi of Italy took the opportunity with both hands and made her way into the finals against Alexandrova.

Ekaterina Alexandrova took part in her second final of the year, having previously lost to Viktoria Kuzmova in Budapest in June 2018.

The only previous meeting of last year’s Linz finalists went the way of Camila Giorgi, the 26-year-old winning in three sets in Katowice in 2016.

And as it turned out, Camila Giorgi won a big-hitting battle with Alexandrova to win her first WTA title in over three years. She won it by knocking out the Russian in straight sets.
