This competition kick-started in 2020 which was its first season with the tournament played in the month of March. It is a part of WTA 250 series on the tour.

2023 WTA Lyon Open Schedule & Dates
The 2023 edition will be the fourth edition of the WTA Lyon Open which will be hosted at the Palais des Sports de Gerland and kick-start from Monday, February 13.
That will signal the start of the main draw which will be preceded by the qualifiers three days before that and the tournament will go on till Sunday, February 19 when the women’s singles final will be played.

Zhang Shuai overcame the first set deficit in the final of the 2022 Lyon Open to defeat Dayana Yastremska and win the tournament.
Seeded eighth in the tournament, Shuai’s path to the final was cleared in many ways, facing no seeded players in her way to making it to the title-win. She did overcome Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinal, a player who would later go on to qualify for the WTA Finals in 2022.
In a rather surprising final of the 2021 edition, two qualifiers made it through with Clara Tauson eventually defeating Viktorija Golubic to lift the title.
Sofia Kenin followed up her Australian Open title win with another victory at the 2020 Lyon Open. Kenin overcame Anna-Lena Friedsam in the final, beating her in three sets.
This was after the American top seed needed three tie-breakers to win her semifinal against Alison van Uytvanck and Friedsam edged out Daria Kasatkina.
The 2020 edition of the tournament was its ever season. This tournament replaced the Tashkent Open which was in its 21st edition last season and saw Alison van Uytvanck win the title by beating Sorana Cirstea in the final in three sets.
Defending champion and second seed Margarita Gasparyan was ousted in the second round, while top seeded Viktoria Kuzmova made it to the last-eight before going out. Kristyna Pliskova and Katarina Zavatska were the other semifinalists in the competition.
