What Happened at the 2022 WTA Nottingham?

It was Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia who won the 2022 edition the WTA Nottingham Open as she overcame USA’s Alison Riske in the title-decider.

Hadda Maia won 6–4, 1–6, 6–3 in what was her maiden WTA tournament triumph and first Brazilian to do that on grass in over 50 years. She also knocked the top seeded Maria Sakkari out in the quarterfinal round.

Local hope and previous year’s US Open winner Emma Raducanu lasted all of seven games in the tournament before retiring from her first round match against Viktorija Golubic.

Johanna Konta won the 2021 WTA Nottingham Open by defeating Zhang Shuai in the final. She won 6-2, 6-1.

The Brit, who was the top seed in the event, was taken to three sets in her semifinal against Nina Stojanovic, while Shuai needed a third set tie-breaker in her quarterfinal win over Kristina Mladenovic.

The 2020 edition of the WTA Nature Valley Open was cancelled because of the global virus illness.

In 2019, the top two seeds, Caroline Garcia and Donna Vekic gave the crowd a final befitting the occasion. They fought tooth and nail before Garcia edged out her Croatian opponent Vekic in three sets, coming back from a set down. She needed two tie-breakers to win the match and lift the trophy.

The seeded list was increased to 10 players after Yulia Putintseva and Dayana Yastremska withdrew from the tournament because of injuries. Ninth seeded Tatjana Maria went on to make the semifinal while the 10th seeded Evgeniya Rodina was knocked out in the first round itself.

Garcia beat Jennifer Brady and Vekic overcame Maria in three sets apiece to enter the final.
