What Happened at the 2019 WTA Nuremberg Cup?
Top seeded Yulia Putintseva lived up to her top billing as she romped through the competition to win the title. Putintseva defeated Tamara Zidansek in the final after being a set down having earlier needed three tie-breakers in her quarterfinal against Anna-Lena Friedsam as well.
Second seeded Katerina Siniakova also reached the semis but was sent out by Zidansek but what’s interesting is none of the other seeded players even managed to reach the last-eight stage of the competition. This included the likes of Alison Riske, Kirsten Flipkens and Evgeniya Rodina who were all sent packing in the opening round.
In 2018, the event featured a pool of several top players like Sloane Stephens, Julia Goerges, and Kiki Bertens. They were joined by the likes of Shuai Zhang, Irina-Camelia Begu, Sorana Cirstea, and others. Bertens started as the two-time defending champion.
Five of the top eight seeds lost in the first round itself, with Stephens and Goerges biting the dust. Youngsters like Riske, Larsson, and Siniakova were on fire throughout the week, moving past their competition with the utmost ease.
Bertens lost in the quarterfinal to Kirsten Flipkens who, in turn, lost to Riske in the semifinal. The final showdown between Larsson and Riske was an intriguing one although, the Swiss dominated that match handsomely and defeated the American to lift her second singles title of her career.
