What Happened at the 2020 WTA Rosmalen Open?

The 2020 edition of the Rosmalen Open was cancelled because of the pandemic.

Alison Riske won the 2019 edition of the WTA Rosmalen by defeating Kiki Bertens in a strange final. Bertens blanked Riske in the first set, winning 6-0 before Riske made a comeback and won the next two to stop her opponent.

Three of the seeded players withdrew from the competition, Petra Martic, Zheng Saisai and Amanda Anisimova while Alison van Uyvanck was added to the seeded player list. Top seeded Bertens was the only seed to reach the quarterfinal.

The 2018 edition of the tournament saw Aleksandra Krunic win the tournament, marking her first major WTA title on the tour. She defeated Kirsten Flipkens in the final in three sets with 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-1.

It was an inspiring run by Krunic who did quite well despite being placed in a fairly tricky bracket. Up until the semifinal, she didn’t face any major difficulties and moved up comfortably against the likes of Bibiane Schoofs and Veronika Kudermetova. The 26-year-old Serbian then met the number 1 seed Coco Vandeweghe in the semis and moved past her after three gruelling sets.

Meanwhile, Flipkens knocked out some big names in the process from the tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Starting with the number three seed Kiki Bertens, she then moved to defeat the Belarusian ace Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-4. After that, it was a matter of surviving as she edged past Viktoria Kuzmova 7-5, 6-7(9), 6-4.
