What Happened in the 2020 WTA San Jose?

There was no San Jose held in 2020.

In a shock result, Zheng Saisai clinched the 2019 San Jose Open title, her maiden competition win at this level, as she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets in the title-decider. This was after both took no time in getting past Maria Sakkari and Donna Vekic in their respective semifinal wins.

Defending champion Mihaela Buzarnescu was sent packing in round one while the top seeded Svitolina made the quarterfinal but went down to Sakkari.

In the previous edition of San Jose Silicon Valley Classic, Buzarnescu proved to be the surprising winner, defeating Maria Sakkari in the final with 6-1, 6-0. Undoubtedly, it was among the most clinical performances by the veteran Romanian in a considerably long time.

Madison Keys was the defending champion but her withdrawal due to an injury opened up the path for others. But more impressively, it was a star-studded field with the likes of Elise Mertens, Azarenka, Konta, Venus Williams, starting as heavy favourites. However, by the semifinals, only a handful few remained.

In the first semifinal, Collins and Sakkari battled it out in what is set to be one of their many meetings on the tour. The Greek prevailed in three sets while Buzarnescu battled past Mertens to reach the final. Even though the playing field was not the strongest the tournament has ever seen, it was still an exciting affair with some quality tennis!
