What Happened at the 2022 WTA Swiss Open?

It was Petra Martic who came away a title winner in the 2022 Swiss Open, with the unseeded Croat overpowering the Serb qualifier Olga Danilovic. Earlier, Martic had stunned one of the tournament favourites Caroline Garcia in the semifinals.

Danielle Collins, who was the top seed, fell in the very first round in a third set tie-breaker to Simona Waltert, while the defending champion Tamara Zidansek lost in three sets to Anna Kalinskaya.

Tamara Zidansek was the winner at the 2021 edition of the Lausanne Open, after she defeated Clara Burel in three sets. Zidansek won 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 to lift the crown, having begun the competition as the top seed.

Earlier in the semifinals, Zidansek had raced past Maryna Zanevska while Burel had shocked fellow Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia.

The Swiss Open 2020 was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2019 edition of the Swiss Open for women was the first tournament which was played in Lausanne. Fiona Ferro emerged as the surprise winner of the competition when she defeated fellow Frenchwoman and defending champion Alize Cornet in the final.

Cornet, incidentally, was the only seeded player to make it to the quarterfinal, even as the other top-ranked players fell by the wayside early in the tournament.

In 2018, the event took place in Gstaad, where the number one seed Cornet defeated Mandy Minella in the final to win her sixth singles title on the tour. It was a commanding performance by Cornet, who won all of her matches in straight sets.

She cleared her early rounds with absolute finesse before facing the big guns like Samantha Stosur and Eugenie Bouchard. It didn’t take a lot from Cornet to dismantle the two players as she sailed into the final comfortably.

As for Minella, she started the Swiss Open with a protected ranking and soon, ran into the number two seed Johanna Larsson. After defeating her in straight sets, she defeated the likes of Sara Sorribes Tormo and Marketa Vondrousova to make it to the final.
