What Happened at the 2022 ATP Montpellier Open?

The sixth seeded Alexander Bublik defeated his namesake and the top seeded Zverev in the final to come up a winner in the 2022 tournament. Bublik won 6-4, 6-3 to claim the trophy.

Earlier Bublik had overcome Filip Krajinovic while Zverev routed Mikael Ymer in their respective semifinals to make it through to the decider. Defending champion Goffin had lost in the second round.

No. 2 seed David Goffin won the 2021 tournament, defeating Roberto Bautista Agut in the final with 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

The former top 10 player won the fifth title of his career in Montpellier after upsetting Benjamin Bonzi, Lorenzo Sonego, and Egor Gerasimov. As for Bautista Agut, he started as the top seed and made it to the final showdown after wins over Grégoire Barrère, Ugo Humbert, and Peter Gojowczyk.

As for the other seeds, Dusan Lajovic and Hubert Hurkacz could only make it as far as the second round while Jannik Sinner fell in the opener.

Frenchman Gael Monfils overcame the Canadian challenge of Vasek Pospisil in the final to pouch the 2020 trophy. He won 7-5, 6-3, after having ousted Filip Krajinovic in the semifinal in straight sets as well. Pospisil had surprised the second-seeded Goffin in his last-four encounter.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a wildcard entrant into the tournament after having slipped down the rankings due to fitness issues, won the 2019 title by beating Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the final in straight sets. Herbert was the only seeded player to have made it to the semifinal with Lucas Pouille, David Goffin and Gilles Simon all losing in the second round.

Defending champion Lucas Pouille was ousted from the tournament in the second round, losing to Marcos Baghdatis.

This was after Pouille won the 2018 edition of the ATP Montpellier Open by defeating Richard Gasquet in the final in straight sets. He had won 7-6, 6-4 in a hard-fought finale to clinch the title. Earlier, the second-seeded Pouille was up by a set, but at 5-5 in the second set, his opponent Jo-Wilfried Tsonga withdrew from the semi-final match. Gasquet needed three sets to get the better of top-seeded Goffin in his semi-final.
