Dominic Thiem v Pablo Cuevas Head to Head

The two players have met six times on the ATP tour, with Thiem leading the head-to-head 4-2. They have met five times on clay with Thiem only losing their first ever meeting at Roland Garros in 2015.

The players have already met twice this year at Buenos Aires and at this year’s French Open, with Thiem winning both, dropping a set each time.

Thiem Looking to Overcome Poor Wimbledon Showing

World number four from Austria, Dominic Thiem returns to his favorite surface for the last bit of clay court tennis in 2019.

Thiem has had a strong clay court season yet again, winning the Barcelona ATP 500, being a semi-finalist at the Madrid ATP Masters 1000 defeating Roger Federer and a finalist at the French Open, after an epic semifinal victory against world number one Novak Djokovic.

The Austrian also won the Indian Wells Masters 1000 on the outdoor hard courts in California. A disappointing Wimbledon performance losing in the first round to American Sam Querrey was a dampener on an otherwise very good first half of the year.

Thiem comes to Hamburg as a strong favorite, along with Alexander Zverev, and despite the Wimbledon disappointment on grass, will favor his chances here again..

Veteran Cuevas Hoping for Good Showing on Favorite Surface

Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas has been on the ATP tour for more than a decade now. His best known achievement has been winning the 2008 French Open doubles title alongside Peruvian Luis Homa.

Cuevas is a clay court specialist who has won six ATP singles titles, all on clay. He was ranked within the top 20 in the world in 2016, ranked number 19. He is currently ranked number 46th.

In 2016, Cuevas had a very strong run during the South American clay swing, winning the Rio Open defeating Rafael Nadal, and the Brasil Open in Sao Paulo the following week.

He has always been consistent on the clay, and was this season too, finishing as runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the ATP 250 at Estoril, Portugal.

Dominic Thiem v Pablo Cuevas Predictions & Tips

Both players are rather comfortable on this surface, and this always sets up for an interesting clash. Thiem has definitely had the better clay court season of the two and will be looking to capitalize on it.

Despite a very disappointing Wimbledon, when it comes to the clay, Thiem is definitely the second best player today after Rafael Nadal.

Cuevas is a gritty clay courter and not an easy opponent, but it is hard to not pick Thiem here, given form and surface. Expect the Austrian to win in two well-fought sets.

Tip: Thiem to win in straight sets: 11/10 (888Sport)
