Great Britain’s Johanna Konta has recorded the most famous win of her career by crushing Serena Williams in the first round of the San Jose Open on Tuesday. She handed Williams her worst loss in the form of a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of the Wimbledon finalist.
Williams struggled with her game but what was most striking about the encounter was she lost 12 games in a row to bow out of her opening match of the tournament against an opponent she had played once before and won convincingly.
The Brit needed less than an hour to make it to round two after Williams looked to have started off reasonably with a hold on her first serve. She never won another game in the match to be dished out her worst defeat in competitive tennis competitions.

Seven double-faults and 25 unforced errors punctuated her game while Konta made just nine errors.
Konta admitted Williams wasn’t playing to the best of her abilities and called the experience to be playing on the same court as the former world number one to be a humbling experience.
At the end of the match, Konta said:
“It’s an absolute privilege for me to be on the same court as her. She obviously wasn’t playing anywhere near her best level but I was just trying to play the match on my terms and do what I can out here and put aside the incredible champion she is and play the player on the day.”
She will now play Sofia Kenin in her second round match.
Victoria Azarenka also shrugged off the loss of the second set of her opening match against Kateryna Bodarenko to win the final set 7-5 and enter round two. She can be expected to be tested in her second round match by the top seed Garbine Muguruza, who had a wild-card and a first round bye to play in this competition.
Serena’s older sister Venus Williams also has a first round bye and faces another Brit in the form of Heather Watson in her second round match. Watson defeated Claire Liu in three sets to set up the meeting.
