Gilles Simon v Pablo Andujar Head to Head
Simon and Andujar have met thrice on the ATP Tour. Andujar leads by 2-1, with their last match taking place in Gstaad in 2014. The Spaniard was declared the winner of that match after Simon retired in the second set.
Simon Finds his Rhythm Again
Gilles Simon started the season on a very promising note with back to back semifinal appearances in the ATP Pune and Sydney. After these wins, he succumbed to poor form and ended up losing early in big events like the Australian Open, ATP Montpellier, and Rotterdam.
His performance in the Sunshine Doubles wasn’t that great either. However, in Marrakech, he started as the fourth seed and has certainly done well to reach the semifinal.
He hasn’t had a difficult run, given that most of his opponents were lowly-ranked players. In the opener, he defeated Jozef Kovalik in straight sets and then repeated similar results against Guido Andreozzi and Taro Daniel.
Simon is in the hunt for his first singles title since the ATP Metz last season. Being the French No. 3 at the moment, a good run where will push him closer to the top 20.
Andujar Hoping to Replicate his Challenger Success
The 33-year-old Spaniard started his run in the tournament with a 7-6(6), 6-3 win over Federico Delbonis and then defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber with a very similar score.
In the quarterfinal, he got a walkover when his opponent, Jiri Vesely, withdrew from the tournament.
Andujar arrived in Marrakech on the back of two, back to back Challenger trophies he picked up in Marbella and Alicante, Spain. These two major victories have certainly helped him gather the much-needed momentum for the ATP circuit.
Prior to this spell, the Spaniard lost early in Sydney, Melbourne, and Cordoba. However, given that he is the defending champion in Marrakech, it comes as no surprise to see him break that jinx and deliver impressive results here.
Simon v Andujar Prediction and Tips:
On one hand, Simon has more winning experience and momentum than Andujar while on the other, the Spaniard is the defending champion here and there is a lot at stake for him. His two, recent Challenger wins have helped him reach the semifinal here but now, he faces his first real test.
We can expect Andujar to come out with all guns blazing and he will certainly fancy his chances here, given that he holds a 2-1 lead over Simon. My gut feeling is with Andujar on this one.
Tip: Andujar to win: 11/10 (Unibet)
