Borna Coric v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

The pair have met once before in the Croatian Open of 2014, with Fognini winning a close match on clay in three sets.

Coric Looking to Build on Early Season Form

Coric came into Monte-Carlo looking to build on his early season form which included a 4th round in Melbourne, a semi-final appearance in Dubai, and a run to the quarters in Miami.

However, never having made it past the second round here before, he would have been expecting some tough matches this week, and so it has proved, taken to three sets both by Spain’s Jaume Munar in the first round, and then by Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in the second.

He would have been expecting another close battle with France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Thursday, but instead won surprisingly easily, dominating with his serve, and converting the three break point opportunities he was given. More of the same against Fognini would be very welcome.

Fognini Shakes of Injury Concerns with Big Win

After revealing that he had been battling with persistent elbow and wrist problems that will eventually need surgery, Fognini had very low expectations coming into this week, with a 2019 record littered with early exits from tournaments.

And, when he was a set and two breaks down to Andrey Rublev in the first round, it seemed like a familiar ending was in sight.

Yet he found the resilience to battle back and win that match, and then benefitted from a bye into the third round when Gilles Simon of France withdrew from his match.

Few though would have given him much chance against the third seed Alexander Zverev of Germany. Yet he suddenly found his game and produced one of his best performances for many a long day, defeating his much-vaunted opponent in straight sets.

From nowhere it seems, he has a chance of a Masters semi-final and it could be a well-deserved one too given his win over Zverev.

Coric v Fognini Predictions & Tips

As far as the bookmakers are concerned there is very little between these two – Coric is the slight favourite at 89/100, whilst Fognini is 6/5. Much may depend on whether the exertions of the week have caught up with the Italian’s ailing body. If he can stay fit, he must have a good chance on this surface.

Tip: Fognini to win in three sets sets: 18/5 (888Sport)
