South Africa’s Kevin Anderson has been ruled out of the 2019 US Open because of a knee injury.

Anderson who was supposed to begin his US Open 2019 campaign on Monday with a match against American Zachary Svajda, will now be replaced by Paolo Lorenzi – a lucky loser in the qualifiers. The 33-year-old and seeded 16th in the competition this season, has already made it to the final of the US Open once before and was also a finalist in the 2018 tournament.

He last played a tennis tournament at Wimbledon earlier this year and lost in the third round of that tournament. Since then he has been trying to return to the circuit but he will now need to look at the Masters competitions, Shanghai and Paris, to try and earn a few big points.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic will start off the tournament as a favourite but Daniil Medvedev’s brilliant form in the competitions leading to this year’s US Open places him as one of the players outside the Top Three to watch out. The tournament begins on Monday, August 26, with Ash Barty taking on Zarina Diyas in the first match on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
