Belinda Bencic v Bianca Andreescu Preview:

What a way to play your first match against each other. Bencic and Andreescu haven’t faced off yet and their maiden meeting comes at such a crucial, crucial stage – the winner makes it to their maiden Grand Slam final. Which is also why this match might not always be a case of who plays better but who maintains their cool under pressure, and a result, who makes lesser mistakes than the other.

On her way to making it to the semi-final, Canada’s Andreescu has already beaten Caroline Wozniacki and Elise Mertens, but is coming off back to back three-setters. Not that it should bother a lot given how things transpired at the Rogers Cup where she faced something similar against Kiki Bertens and Karolina Pliskova but came back to defeat Sofia Kenin in the semi-final.

Stunningly, Andreescu has lost just four matches this year, winning 43 in the process and that is a kind of win-loss record usually associated with someone of the stature of Serena Williams at her prime.

Bencic’s record isn’t as imposing but she has grown as a player throughout the season. The Swiss started off the year ranked 55th in the world, but a Dubai Open title win ensured that changed quickly. Since then a semi-final at the Indian Wells Open, another one at Madrid Open and a final at the Mallorca Open have propelled her to 12th in the world, close to her career-best of number seven.

A semi-final here at the US Open, following in from the first round exit last year at Flushing Meadows should be enough to push her ranking even further up but that will be the last thing on her mind. What she would like to do is to show the kind of form she has all tournament, including in her straight-set demolition of Donna Vekic last round.

The good news for Bencic is also her fitness; she was afforded a bye in the third round and had a lot more time to recover than Andreescu who not only played the third match of Wednesday – to Bencic’s first – but was also taken to three sets.
