A match that was fought hard by both players for most part saw Bencic edge out her opponent by taking control of crucial moments in the encounter.

Take for example the first set in which Vekic held a break and had to serve for the set. Bencic raised her game, broke her Croat opponent back to take the set into a tie-breaker.

In the tie-breaker again she had to fight hard but held the edge. Vekic needed to save three set-points, of which she did on two occasions, before Bencic served it out to win it 7-5.

The second set went on serve for the first six games but Bencic did it again in the seventh, breaking Vekic to love and took a 4-3 lead. The 13th seed held on and then broke Vekic yet again to seal the match, 7-5, 6-3.

Bencic’s previous best at the Grand Slam level was a quarter-final at the US Open itself, a result she had achieved as a teenager in 2014. The Swiss, who had a 2-1 win-loss record against Vekic before today, has had a decent run in 2019, having won the Dubai title and having made the final of the Mallorca Open on grass.

She will now take on the winner of the match between Bianca Andreescu and Elise Mertens, who play later in the evening.
