First things first, and the ATP Next Gen Finals is a newly-formed tournament which was first played in 2017. The format of the competition was on the lines of the ATP World Tour Finals but with a few tweaks to the way the matches were played.

Eight players participate in this competition and as the name ATP Next Gen Finals suggests they are players who are expected to be the next-generation stars.

They are divided into two groups of four each.

Every player plays three matches and at the end of the round-robin league stage of the tournament, the top two make it to the semi-finals. This is followed by the final.

2022 ATP Next Gen Finals Schedule & Dates

This fifth season of the ATP Next Gen will be played from November 8 to 12, 2022.

There will be four matches to be played on each of the first three days of the competition. The top two players from each group will then advance to the semifinals which will be held on November 11 and that will be followed by the final on November 12.

What are the ATP Next Gen Finals Rules & Format?

This season is going to be no different in terms of the format but what’s also interesting to see is the format tweaks to the sport itself.

Matches will be best of five sets but a set will consist of four games, i.e. a player winning four instead of six games wins the set. There will be a tie-breaker at 3-3.

The ATP Next Gen Finals used to have no lets on serve earlier but this has now changed, and in order to expedite the process of playing the matches, they will begin five minutes from the entry of the second player and points will need to be played within 25 seconds.

Some of the other things that have been done to expedite the matches is to reduce the medical timeouts to just one per player, the matches to begin within four minutes after the second player arrives on court and live electronic calling to monitor close calls.

Player & Team List for 2022 Next Gen

Two players, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner had qualified for this year’s Next Gen Finals but have withdrawn from the tournament. Alcaraz, who is the top-ranked player in the world after winning the US Open, will participate in the ATP Finals instead.

Instead it will be Holger Rune who leads the draw as the top seed and he will be joined by Lorenzo Musetti.

Great Britain’s Jack Draper will be one to watch out, and he will be joined by American player Brandon Nakashima. Jiri Lehecka, Chun-hsin Tseng, Francesco Passaro and Dominic Stricker will be the others in action.

Matteo Arnaldi and Luca Nardi are the alternates in case of any further withdrawals.
