Denis Shapovalov was expected to be one of the dark horses at the Australian Open this year but was sent packing in the first round of the competition on the opening day.
The Canadian youngster lost to Martin Fucsovics in a feisty encounter that lasted four sets and saw him get involved in a spat with the chair umpire in the third set. Fucsovics won 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-1, 7-6(3) to march into the second round.
13th seeded Shapovalov was given a code violation for smashing his racquet on the court in the third set, when he went after the chair umpire. This was followed by Fucsovics running away with the set to take a two sets to one lead.

In the fourth set, Shapovalov got an early break but lost serve soon after and was taken into the tie-breaker which he lost. Fucsovics could now take on Jannik Sinner who was leading by two sets to love in his opening match against Max Purcell.
Also losing in the first round at the 2020 Australian Open was Croatia’s Borna Coric, who went own to USA’s Sam Querrey. Coric, seeded 25th, was no match for his American opponent who won 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to enter the second round.
Querrey will now take on Ricardas Berankis in the second round. Berankis also wasted no time in getting rid of Roberto Carballés Baena in his opener.
Advancing to the second round were eighth seeded Matteo Berrettini who crushed wildcard entrant Andrew Harris in the first round 6-3, 6-1, 6-3. Another Aussie wildcard John-Patrick Smith was also went down to the 22nd seeded Guido Pella in straight sets. Third seeded Roger Federer also had no difficulties getting past Steve Johnson in his opening round match, winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 against USA’s Steve Johnson.
