Daniil Medvedev v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head
This will be their third meeting with both players having won once apiece. Of course, Medvedev’s victory came in 2019, at the Washington Open where he defeated Tiafoe in straight sets while the American had won a qualifier on clay in Nice in 2015.
Medvedev off to a Flier Again
After the kind of 2019 he had, all eyes were on Daniil Medvedev and how he kick-starts his new season and there was no disappointing anyone. He started off with a title win at Diriyah, where he hardly broke into a sweat while getting past Jan-Lennard Struff, David Goffin and Fabio Fognini to win the title.
And then showed remarkable reserves of class and mental toughness take Russia to the semifinals by winning all his four singles matches again at the ATP Cup. It was only Novak Djokovic’s hard-fought, three-set victory over Medvedev which finally managed to stop Russia from entering the title-decider.
If Medvedev can maintain his level of fitness, another deep run into this tournament looks a very likely outcome but first, he will need to get past a potentially sticky, but an out-of-form Tiafoe…
Tiafoe Trying for Turnaround
Less than year ago, Tiafoe was looking to break into the top 25 of the ATP Rankings but the form looks to have deserted him since. In fact, 2019 turned out to be a depressingly underwhelming year for Tiafoe who failed to reach the semifinal of even one ATP tournament whole year.
That was after his quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open where he edged past Kevin Anderson and Grigor Dimitrov and another last-eight entry in Miami. There, he won three matches in a row before losing to Denis Shapovalov.
However, only two quarterfinal appearances followed after that, and both at ATP 250 competitions, while losing 30 of the 53 matches he played in meant he started off the season ranked 47th in the world. And what makes it worse is the start to the 2020 season too in which he has lost both his first round matches at Doha Open and Auckland Open.
Daniil Medvedev v Frances Tiafoe Predictions & Tips
It should come as no surprise Medvedev starts off as a heavy favourite to win this one, with 1/8 for his win. Even a straight-set win for Medvedev is a mere 8/11 which is what we will go with for this one given the obvious difference in the current pedigree of the two players.
Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 8/11 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
