In what could come as a news in a positive direction for tennis fans, there has been a proposal to move the Cincinnati Masters to New York this season.

New York Times is reporting there has been a suggestion made by the USTA to move the Western and Southern Open from Cincinnati to New York. According to the proposal, the tournament could be played at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center which also hosts the US Open.

The ATP and WTA tour has already seen a cancellation of all tennis till the end of July with the decision about the next set of tournaments to be taken soon too.

In fact, the US Open authorities had decided to wait till towards the second or third week of June before deciding to make the call on the year’s typically fourth Grand Slam. Now the United States Tennis Association wants to club the US Open with the Western and Southern Open – a tournament which is a part of the US Open Series – and play it in New York.

And while no official decision has been made as yet, a statement released by the Western and Southern Open did say they were exploring multiple possibilities.

“The USTA and Western & Southern Open have been exploring multiple scenarios for the tournament.  The number one goal is to hold the tournament, in some form, this summer.”

One of the chief reasons for this move to play both tournaments at one venue is to allow overseas a better chance of quarantining or, as explained in the article in NYTimes.com, a “safer bubble for competitors”.

While nothing is confirmed yet, the general optics around this move seem a step in the direction of resumption of tennis.

Some of the European countries have already begun hosting tennis tournaments for the top ATP and WTA players but it still remains to be seen whether a resumption of full-fledged tour-level competitions. One of the bigger issues facing tennis with respect to hosting such tournaments is the risks associated with players travelling from different parts of the world.
