The Hopman Cup is an important tournament in the Australian Open series, which features international tennis teams, rather than individual players as seen on the WTA or ATP tour. The tournament is sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation, and features male and female players on the same team, representing their countries. The competition is of the mixed category and national coaches of the countries play no role in deciding the team.
Even though the individual player results are not included in the calculations towards the ranking, the Hopman Cup is still one of the most entertaining events in the Australian Open series. The event takes place in Perth, draws in huge crowds from Western Australia every season.
2019 Hopman Cup Schedule & Dates:
The 2019 Hopman Cup will be played in the first week of January. It kick-starts from December 29, 2018 and will go all the way up to January 5, 2019, when the final will be played.
Each year, eight teams from eight countries participate in the tournament. The eight teams are split in two groups of four, which then compete in a robin round format.
Every team, comprising of a male and a female player, plays three matches with the opposing team – one men’s singles match, one women’s singles match and a mixed doubles.
The leaders of each group compete in the final for the prestigious championship trophies, usually studded with gold and diamonds.

Interesting to note that two of the best all-time tennis players, men and women, will both feature in the 2019 Hopman Cup after both Roger Federer and Serena Williams confirmed their participation in the tournament.
2019 Hopman Cup Results:
The competition began with Australia getting the better of France 2-1, with Ash Barty and Matthew Ebden both winning their singles matches to take an invincible lead before losing in their mixed doubles match. On the same day, Great Britain were helped by Cameron Norrie who overcame Stefanos Tsitsipas and his doubles pairing with Marria Sakkari to help them win that tie against Greece 2-1.
Germany blanked Spain 3-0 with Alexanderr Zverev defeating a fighting David Ferrer and Angelique Kerber overcoming Garbine Muguruza before the pair clinching the mixed doubles match as well. Switzerland then ran away to a 3-0 win over Great Britain with Roger Federer winning it in straight sets and Belinda Bencic also not dropping a set.
Greece surprised USA 2-1 despite Serena Williams’ straight set win over Sakkari, which was followed by the Americans going down to Federer’s Switzerland as well, losing 2-1.
Germany strengthened their chances of making the final with a 2-1 win over France in a rubber that the former won via the singles matches itself. Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev won both their singles matches but lost in the mixed doubles encounter.
For them to qualify for the final though, they will need to beat Australia, who overcame Spain 2-1 after a similar scoreline against France as well. Great Britain defeated USA 2-1 despite Serena Williams’ straight-set win over Katie Boulter in their singles match.
What Happened at the 2018 Hopman Cup?
Last year, the Hopman Cup featured teams from Germany, USA, Belgium, Russia, Japan, Canada and Switzerland apart from hosts Australia.
The event was won by Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic, who won all their matches during the group stage of the competition, finishing with 3-0 on rubbers won and 9-0 on matches won before edging out Germany in the final 2-1. It was Switzerland’s third Hopman Cup title.
For the 2019 Hopman Cup, five of the teams have been confirmed. This includes hosts Australia and defending champions Switzerland to go with Greece, Spain and Germany. As for the other teams, they will be confirmed around the same time.
