This mixed team event was first played in 1989 and has since then become a regular in the tennis calendar. It is often used by players as a warm-up event for the Australian Open and despite no ATP and WTA points available for their rankings, a lot of top players feature in the Hopman Cup.
The Hopman Cup was earlier played at the Burswood Dome but has now been shifted to the Perth Arena.
Switzerland won the Hopman Cup title last year, after the 2017 champions France decided not to feature in the tournament. Placed in the Group B of the competition, Switzerland won all their matches in the round-robin stage, beating USA, Russia and Japan.
Incidentally, they won all three matches against each of these opponents, dropping a mere three sets in the group stage of the tournament.
In the final, Switzerland took on Germany and while Angelique Kerber kept the Germans in the tie by levelling the score 1-1, the Federer-Bencic combination stormed through in the final match against Zverev and Kerber to win the title.
