Cilic Holds Off Spirited Kwon Challenge
World No. 44 Marin Cilic held off a spirited challenge from South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo in the quarterfinals on Friday to reach his first semifinal on the tour in over a year.
The 2014 U.S. Open champion, who last featured in a semifinal at the Kremlin Cup in 2019, faltered after a good start before holding nerves and sealing a final four spot with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory.
The third seed served 18 aces, won 80% of his first serve points, converted four of 12 break point chances and saved three of six to win the contest in two hours.
Aiming to win a 19th career title, Cilic began his Singapore Open campaign on Wednesday with a straight sets win over Japan’s Taro Daniel in the Round of 16.
Given a bye in the first round, the Croatian defeated the Japanese 7-5, 6-4 to notch his first win of 2021 and snap a four-match losing streak, which began in the Round of 16 of the Paris Masters in November 2020.
A runner-up at Wimbledon 2017 and the Australian Open in 2018, Cilic is closing in on the elite group of players with 20 or more Tour titles. Roger Federer (103), Rafael Nadal (86), Novak Djokovic (82), Andy Murray (46) and Juan Martin del Potro (22) are the only active players with more than 20 titles.

Popyrin Into His Maiden Tour Semifinal
Australia’s Alexei Popyrin served 14 aces and saved two set points in the second set to march into his first tour-level semifinal with a 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) win over fellow Australian Matthew Ebden.
Building on a good start to 2021, the 114th-ranked Popyrin improved to 6-2 this year.
The 21-year-old, who beat America’s Christopher Eubanks 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) in the first round in Singapore, was taken to the deciding set by Bulgaria’s Adrian Andreev in the second round on Wednesday before he came back to win the contest 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
Against Ebden on Friday, Popyrin won 81% of his first serve points, didn’t allow his opponent a single break point opportunity and capitalized on the only break point he had in the match that lasted an hour and 25 minutes.
Popyrin, who is looking to break into the top 100 with a run to the final in Singapore, came into the tournament on the back of solid Melbourne performances. First he reached the Round of 16 at the Murray River Open after winning his first two matches and then edged past David Goffin in the first round of the Australian Open after a five-set thriller.
Cilic v Popyrin Prediction and Tip
It’s a match-up between two big-serving players (Cilic is 6’6” and Popyrin 6’5”) and should produce a number of aces. With Cilic slowly getting into form, he will use all his experience against the young Aussie to inch closer to a 19th title.
Tip: Cilic to win: 4/6 (bet365)
