Elise Mertens v Fiona Ferro Head to Head
They are 1-1 from their previous two meetings, with Ferro winning in Seville in 2015 and Mertens winning at Wimbledon in 2019.

Mertens Brings Top Form To Dubai
Having ended the 2020 season on a high by reaching the final of the Linz Open, Elise Mertens began 2021 on an even better note, winning the Gippsland Trophy and collecting her sixth WTA title.
A 2018 Australian Open semifinalist, Mertens also had a pretty good run at the Melbourne Slam this year, reaching the Round of 16 by defeating Leylah Fernandez, Zhu Lin and Belinda Bencic in the first three rounds. She was however handed her first defeat of the year by Karolina Muchova in the fourth round.
The 25-year-old Belgian, who is a nine-time WTA finalist, also reached the final in Prague last year.
Although she remained title-less in 2020, it was a pretty satisfying year for the World No. 18, who also reached the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open, the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open for the second straight year, and the last eight of four other tournaments to go with her two runner-up finishes.
Mertens’ five previous titles came in Hobart in 2017 and 2018, in Lugano and Rabat in 2018 and in Doha in 2019.

Ferro In Decent Form
Facing Mertens in the Dubai opener will be Fiona Ferro, who is coming off a decent run at the Lyon Open this week.
The World No. 46, who pulled off her best Australian Open performance earlier this year by reaching the third round of the first major of the year, entered the semifinal in Lyon before falling to Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic. (Golubic eventually finished runner-up to Denmark’s Clara Tauson in a lopsided final on Sunday).
The 23-year-old right-hander, who is 5-3 this year, is a two-time champion on the tour.
She won her maiden title in Lausanne in 2019, defeating Alize Cornet in the final, and went on to add another in 2020, beating Annett Kontaveit in the title clash in Palermo.
A four-time winner on the ITF circuit, Ferro reached the fourth round of the French Open for the first time last year.
Mertens v Ferro Prediction and Tip
Both players are coming into the tournament with a winning record this year and would like to build on the starts. However, Mertens is the superior player and is expected to advance.
Tip: Mertens to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
