Kei Nishikori v Pierre-Hugues Herbert Head to Head

This will be the fourth meeting between both players, with Nishikori leading the head-to-head 2-1. While Nishikori won their meetings on the hard courts of Miami and Rotterdam, Herbert prevailed on the Monte Carlo clay.

Looking Good In Rotterdam, Nishikori Hopes For Better In Marseille

Once ranked number four in the world, it has been a tough last season and a bit for 2014 US Open finalist and ten time Grand Slam quarter-finalist Kei Nishikori from Japan. While he has made comebacks from injury layoffs in the past, the last year has again seen a mix of injuries, a bout of Covid and poor form.

Ranked number 40 in the world now, Nishikori ended the 2020 season after a second round loss at the French Open hoping to get the much needed rest and recuperation that was needed. 2021 did not start on the best of notes for the star from Japan either.

The ATP Cup saw losses in both his singles matches as Japan did not make it out of the group stages and the Australian Open saw a first round loss against in-form Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta.

The last week at the Rotterdam ATP 500 was a much better outing for Nishikori with victories against Next Gen stars Felix Auger- Aliassime and Alex de Minaur, which did wonders for his confidence, not having defeated a top twenty player in over a year prior to that.

Although the Japanese was eliminated in the final eight by Croatian Borna Coric in two tight tiebreaks, he will be coming to Marseille more confident and assured and looking for a deeper run this week.

Herbert Looking To Stall Decline

Doubles specialist and winner of all major titles as a doubles player, Pierre- Hugues Herbert has looked to focus more on his singles game beginning 2019. The Frenchman has met with success on the faster hard, indoor and grass courts. Having broken into the top 50 on the singles tour and reached a career high number 36 , he has fallen to just within the top 100 in the world, as he seeks a revival.

The 2021 season did not get off to the best of starts for the Frenchman, with opening round losses at Antalya and the Australian Open, and only winning one match at the ATP 250 in Melbourne.

Returning to the indoor European courts where he has done well in the past, Herbert pulled out of Montpellier and after looking in decent form in his Rotterdam opener, lost in straight sets to finalist-to-be Marton Fucsovics of Hungary.

A good run here this week at Marseille will help Hebert halt what currently looks like a decline on the singles tour for him.

Nishikori v Herbert Prediction and Tip

Both players are looking to revive their careers, but Nishikori seems to be on the track more so than Herbert. Add to it the experience that the Japanese brings with him, we are looking at a hard fought straight sets Nishikori win here.

Tip:  Nishikori to win in straight sets : 5/6  (bet365)
