Jessica Pegula v Kristina Mladenovic Head to Head
Both of their previous two meetings have come earlier this year, in Australia and Pegula has registered crushing wins in both. The first was a part of the Yarra Valley Classic where Pegula won 6-4, 6-1 while she then routed Maldenovic in the third round of the Australian Open 6-2, 6-1.

Pegula in Thunderous Form
World number 36 is in the form of her career and enters this tournament with a 10-4 win-loss record under her belt this season.
In theory, this record doesn’t sound the greatest, but when you add the fact that four of those wins came at the Australian Open including one against Elina Svitolina and the quarterfinal defeat came against Jennifer Brady, another in-form American, it goes a long way explaining how difficult it has been to beat Pegula.
At Doha last week, Pegula didn’t have enough ranking points to make the main draw directly at the cut-off time but that didn’t stop her from blowing away three opponents in the qualifiers and then registering three, back to back straight-set wins to make it to the semifinal.
These opponents included Mladenovic, Jelena Ostapenko and Karolina Pliskova before her journey was ended by Petra Kvitova, the eventual winner.
Pegula shouldn’t have too much trouble in this one though given her form and confidence and the fact she is playing an opponent who has found no solutions to her powerful groundstrokes.

Mladenovic Hoping for Consistency
Mladenovic is in her sixth tournament of the season and her performances have been erratic to say the least. A third round appearance at the Australian Open – where she then lost to Pegula – and a quarterfinal at the Lyon Open have been her high points but other than that, the Frenchwoman has lost in the first round of three other tournaments.
This includes an opening round defeat at the hands of Garbine Muguruza at the Abu Dhabi Open, another first round loss at the Yarra Valley Classic and then a straight-set loss to Jil Teichmann in Adelaide before her run in Lyon.
She enters this second round encounter with a confidence-boosting win though. Mladenovic was 8/5 going into her opening round match against Petra Martic but managed to register a straight-set victory that sets her up nicely to try and turn things around against Pegula.
Pegula v Mladenovic Prediction and Tip
Pegula starts off at 1/5 to win this and we are backing her to make it three wins in a row against Mladenovic, and three straight-setters at that.
Tip: Pegula to win in straight sets: 8/15 (bet365)
