Elise Mertens v Caroline Garcia Head to Head

Including a match at the 2019 Fed Cup, these two have featured in four encounters and Garcia leads 3-1. It was in their fourth meeting, at the Gippsland Trophy earlier this year that Mertens finally managed to win a match against Garcia, having also lost at the French Open last season.

Mertens Continues Winning Run

An hour and 22 minutes is all that Mertens needed to complete a straight-set win over the in-form Shelby Rogers, thereby continuing her excellent form. The Dutchwoman won 6-3, 6-3 to enter the third round of the competition, disposing off a player who wasn’t a second-favourite by a lot of distance coming into the encounter.

Things went on serve till the fifth game but Mertens broke Rogers in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead in the set. She then had a couple of set-points on her opponent’s serve and while she didn’t convert them, Mertens then held her own serve to complete the win.

In the second, the pair exchanged a break of serves to kick things off, and while Mertens went 2-1 up with another break, she dropped serve in the sixth of the second set to make it back on serve.

Unfortunately for Rogers, that’s where her steam ran out, and Mertens broke her twice more to complete the rout.

This was after Mertens had nseded three sets in her opener against Viktoriya Kuzmova.

Garcia Trumps Trevisan to Make Round Three

After needing to come back from being a set down in her first round match against Angelique Kerber, Garcia wasted no time in overcoming Martina Trevisan. In a match that lasted just 81 minutes, the Frenchwoman ran away a 6-2, 6-4 winner to clinch her place in the third round.

Aided by Trevisan’s three double-faults, Garcia broke her opponent four times and was at the receiving end of a break of serve just once. And that break of serve came in the second set when Garcia was already 3-0 up, which was followed by both players holding their serves and the Frenchwoman coming through without an issue.

Before this, Garcia was the second favourite going into her opening round match against Kerber but came through in three sets.

Her opponent in this encounter will be a player who has won nine of her last 10 matches and in this kind of form, it would be difficult to stop her.

Mertens v Garcia Prediction and Tip

Mertens has beaten some of the top players to make it this far, having also won the Gippsland Trophy earlier this season. She will be a heavy favourite to win this in two sets.

Tip: Mertens to win in straight sets: 8/13 (bet365)
