Aryna Sabalenka v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

There have been two previous matches played between these players and Sabalenka has won both of them. The first came in the final of the 2019 Wuhan Open where Sabalenka defended her title while in 2020 they faced off in Doha in the second round and the Belarusian came through in three tough sets.

Sabalenka Cruises to Easy Opening Win

After getting a first round bye, Sabalenka came through 6-2, 6-4 to win her second round encounter in nearly an hour and a half to seal her berth in the third round. Sabalenka raced off to three successive breaks of serve to take a 5-0 lead before dropping her serve and then had another few chances to break the Cornet serve in the next game.

In the end, Cornet held serve and Sabalenka served it out in the next game.

The second set began in a bizarre manner as both players struggled to hold on to their serves. Five games in, there were five breaks of serve and only when Sabalenka held on to her own in the sixth did it look like the match would get decided in her favour.

In a final twist, Cornet broke yet again in the eighth game to level things off but failed to do enough off her own serve as Sabalenka raced off to win the set and the match.

Sabalenka had earlier won the title in Abu Dhabi and made it to the fourth round at the Australian Open, but has also suffered two opening losses. Can she mend this slight inconsistency here?

Kontaveit Too Strong for Sorana

Much like was the case in the first round, Kontaveit faced no real issues in getting past Sorana Cirstea in the second round either, winning 6-4, 7-5 to seal her place in this encounter against Sabalenka.

The match lasted an hour and 44 minutes, and had its own ups and downs for the Estonian but she held on to the clutch moments rather well and came through in the end.

Cirstea was up a break early but Kontaveit responded with two of her own to take a 4-2 lead in the opening set. And while Kontaveit dropped serve again, she put enough pressure on Cirstea as she looked to serve to stay in the set and came away easily.

The second set, interestingly went on serve for 11 games. There were the odd break-points for both players including one with Sorana serving at 4-5 amounting to a match-point but it was only in the 12th game that Kontaveit finally took advantage of the third match-point she got and came through.

Sabalenka v Kontaveit Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka is 1/2 to win this and while Kontaveit can be expected to put up a brave front, we don’t see her getting past the Belarusian here.

Tip: Sabalenka to win: 1/2 (bet365)
