Gasquet too strong for Altmaier

In a season in which Richard Gasquet’s progress has been blighted by a succession of injuries, the Frenchman showed little discomfort in reaching the second round of the ATP Emilia-Romagna Open on Tuesday.

Gasquet’s straight-sets victory over the qualifier Daniel Altmaier was thoroughly deserved. He secured four service breaks, twice in each set, and won 81% of his first-serve points. Altmaier as you might remember reached the second week of the French Open last year, upsetting the World No. 9 Matteo Berrettini in the process.

However, the German has also had his own injury problems in recent months. He battled through a hip injury during the off-season and his form on the Challenger tour since his return had largely been modest, to say the least.

Gasquet sensed the window of opportunity to exploit Altmaier’s movement throughout the contest. Can the Frenchman secure back-to-back wins for the second week in a row after last week’s quarterfinal showing in Lyon?

Martinez Humbles Simon

Pedro Martinez also made light work of French veteran Gilles Simon, winning 6-0 6-4 in just 74 minutes to prevent an all-French affair in Round of 16.

The 102nd-ranked Spanish qualifier picked up just his second main draw win of this clay-court season, converting five out of six break points in a one-sided contest. Simon, who forged a reputation for being a hard grafting baseliner, is certainly well past his peak.

The 36-year-old Frenchman won 13 receiving points, half of what Martinez managed, and is now heading to Roland Garros with just two wins all year.

For Martinez, a spot in the quarterfinals of a tour-level event is up for grabs when he takes on Richard Gasquet on Wednesday. The 24-year-old last reached that stage at the Rio Open last year, however, his form at the Challenger level was impressive after winning the Marbella Challenger on home soil.

Gasquet v Martinez Prediction and Tip

Martinez has not fully established himself on the main tour, but this could be a big season for his development. However, he is probably playing Gasquet at his best period. The one-handed Frenchman is coming off a fine week in Lyon and should have an edge in what will likely be a closely contested match.
