Dusan Lajovic v Andrej Martin Head to Head

There have been no previous meetings between these two players at the highest level but they have faced off thrice in three Challenger tournaments between 2009 and 2013. All those matches were won by Lajovic.

Lajovic Finding Form at the Right Time

Six matches in a row. Yep, that’s how many matches had the former world number 23 lost in a row in the lead-up to this competition in Belgrade.

It included the last three in straight sets as well.

Which is why when Lajovic finally managed to win his opener here against Ricardas Berankis, it was not just a relief but bit of a confidence-booster ahead of the season’s second Grand Slam.

And now that he has followed that up with a 6-3, 6-4 drubbing of Jeremy Chardy in the second round, Lajovic has seemingly and suddenly turned things around drastically.

The match lasted an hour and 38 minutes and had its own share of ups and downs but Lajovic always looked like he had the match under control – those 18 break-points he got in the match pointed in that direction.

Now for a rare last eight encounter for the season for Lajovic, whose only solid showing this year had come at the Australian Open where he had reached the fourth round. Can he make it three wins in a row?

Martin’s Playing on Clay Since Australian Open

Once Martin had played an almost customary, three matches on hard courts and lost all of them, he turned his attention to clay this season. And while his performances haven’t been as consistent as he would have liked, Martin has still done a lot better than a lot of the other players ranked outside the top 100.

After a few attempts at making it two wins in a row in a main draw, Martin finally managed to win two in two here in Belgrade. He followed his win over Christopher O’Connelle with a shock victory against Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round.

Martin won 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (4) in match that had 17 breaks of serves including nine for Martin. The final set itself had eight breaks of serve, with Martin failing to serve it out for the match before taking it in a tie-breaker off his first match-point.

Can he give himself a chance in the quarterfinals?
