Jabeur Storms Into the Next Round

World No. 24 Ons Jabeur of Tunisia began her grass court season in style as she demolished Caty McNally of America in the first round of the Birmingham Classic on Tuesday.

The second seed needed just 69 minutes to knock out the 19-year-old qualifier 6-4, 6-2. Jabeur didn’t face a single break point in the match but capitalized on three of five breaking opportunities.

In what was a dominant performance, Jabeur won 87% first serve points and 61.5% second serve points.

The Tunisian, who became the first Arab woman to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament when she made it to the last eight at the Australian Open last year, improved to 24-10 this year following her Tuesday’s victory.

Some of Jabeur’s significant performances this year included a semifinal finish at the Volvo Car Open, where she defeated Cori Gauff in the quarterfinals but fell to Danka Kovinic; she also reached a second career final by defeating Kovinic at the WTA 250 in Charleston, but a first title remained elusive as she went down to Australia’s Astra Sharma.

Jabeur reached her first final at the Kremlin Cup in 2018, but lost to Daria Kasatkina in three.

Fernandez Hustles Past Wang

On Thursday, Jabeur will face Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez, who eased into the second round with a Round of 32 win against China’s Yafan Wang on Tuesday.

Fernandez needed just an hour and 24 minutes to defeat the World No. 118, 7-5, 6-3.

Ranked 66th in the world, the 18-year-old converted three of four break points and saved one of two. She also won 73% service points and 42% receiving points to hand the Chinese player her 15th defeat this year from 18 singles matches across levels.

The Canadian herself improved to 14-10 in the year, which also saw her win her maiden WTA title. A runner-up at Acapulco last year, Fernandez won five matches on a row, including the final against Viktorija Golubic to lift the title in Monterrey.

The left-handed Fernandez, who was the girl’s champion at Roland Garros in 2019 and the girl’s runner-up at the Australian Open the same year, will be eager to make an impact on grass as well and will look to keep the momentum going in the next round.

Jabeur v Fernandez Prediction and Tip
