Novak Djokovic might feature in another of his battles against Rafael Nadal if both of them can win their respective semi-finals at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship.
The three-day tournament announced its draw recently and will see South Africa’s Kevin Anderson take on Hyeon Chung in the first match of the tournament on December 27. This will be followed by the world number eight Dominic Thiem facing off against Karen Khachanov in the second match, both of which are knock-out encounters.
These virtual quarter-finals will be followed by the semi-finals on December 28 where Nadal will face the winner of the Anderson-Chung match and Djokovic will take on one of Thiem or Khachanov.
This is the third time that Anderson will be playing in this exhibition tournament, while for Chung this will be the first ever attempt. Anderson leads Chung 2-0 on head to head.
Thiem featured in this competition last year and was a French Open finalist and made a World Tour Finals appearance earlier this year.
Djokovic and Nadal have byes into the semi-finals, which means they will be playing in their respective first match of the new season on December 28. If both win those games, they will face off in the final that will be held on Saturday, December 29. There will also be a match for the third and fourth place between the losing semi-finalists on Saturday.
The winner of this competition will earn a prize money of $250,000 however, there’s a lot of appearance fee that each of the players are expected to earn out of this tournament.
Incidentally, Djokovic’s first ATP competition of the season will be at the Doha Open while Nadal will kick-start his at Brisbane, where Andy Murray will also take part.
Incidentally, there will also be two women who would participate in the competition of which Venus Williams has agreed to be one. The other player will soon be announced.
