The Shanghai Masters tennis competition is the eighth of nine Masters tournaments played each year in October. The Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in the Minhang District of Shanghai host the event making it the only tennis Masters tournament that is not played in either Europe or America.
Played for the first time in 2009, Djokovic has won this competition four times as of 2018 since his first triumph in 2012. Andy Murray and Roger Federer are two-time winners at the Shanghai Masters as well. Rafael Nadal has been to the final twice but lost both times.
The 2023 edition of the Shanghai Rolex Masters, which is a part of the ATP Masters series, will be played in the first and second week of October of the year and it can be watched live online.
The 2020 edition was expected to be the 11th season of the Shanghai Masters before it was cancelled and postponed to 2021. The 2021 and 2022 editions were also cancelled because of the pandemic.
The tournament will be played at Qi Zhong, on a hard court surface called Deco-Turf.
Daniil Medvedev will start off as the defending champion but it will be interesting to see if he can regain some of the form he had showed till the start of the 2022 season.
Some of the others in action could be Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz while Andy Murray could make a return to this competition as well.
2023 Shanghai Masters Schedule & Dates
The 2023 edition of the Shanghai Masters tennis will begin on October 2 and go on till October 15 with the tournament joining an elite list of competitions to be played over more than a week and consisting of a main draw list of 96 singles players.
The qualifiers will be held Monday-Wednesday in the first week of the tournament with the main draw expected to begin from October 5. The men’s singles final will be held on Sunday, October 15.

What happened at the 2022 Shanghai Masters?
The 2020, 2021 and 2022 edition of the Shanghai Masters wasn’t held because of the pandemic.
Daniil Medvedev proved to be a much-deserved winner of the 2019 Shanghai Masters after he defeated Alexander Zverev in the final in straight sets to lift the title. Interestingly, for the first time in 20 years all four semifinalists at a Masters competition were aged less than 24.
Both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer looked like they were on the path to feature in the final of the 2019 Shanghai Masters but went down in the quarterfinals. Top seeded Djokovic blew a set lead to go down to Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets while Federer was beaten by another Next Gen star, Alexander Zverev.
Medvedev, however, got the better of Tsitsipas in the semifinal, having earlier romped past Fabio Fognini, while Zverev brushed aside Matteo Berrettini. Berrettini would later go on to qualify for his first ever year-ending ATP Finals.
This was after Novak Djokovic won the 2018 Shanghai Masters edition by beating Borna Coric in the final of the competition. This was after Coric upset the 2017 champion Roger Federer in one semi-final and Djokovic was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Alexander Zverev in the other.
Among other players to make it as far as the quarter-finals were Kevin Anderson, Kyle Edmund, Matthew Ebden and Kei Nishikori. Neither of these players managed to win even a set in their quarter-final matches.
Third seeded Juan Martin del Potro retired in the third round of the tournament with a knee issue, while Marin Cilic and Dominic Thiem were both second round losers.
In the 2017 edition of the tournament, defending champion Andy Murray did not participate in the competition because of a hip injury issue, while Novak Djokovic had been struggling throughout the season with his own fitness concerns and missed out.
As it turned out, the top two seeds, the two legends of tennis, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, also the top two seeds in the competition made it to the final. Roger Federer, seeded second, demolished Nadal in straight sets to win the title.
Both players, Nadal and Federer were tested just once apiece in the Shanghai Masters in the lead-up to the title-decider. Nadal was stretched to three sets by Grigor Dimitrov while Juan Martin del Potro won the first set in his semi-final against Federer before going down in three.
Nick Kyrgios, Roberto Bautista-Agut and Jack Sock were three seeded players who were knocked out in the first round while Dominic Thiem, Pablo Carreno Busta, David Goffin, Kevin Anderson and Lucas Pouille were all shown the door in round two.
