Joao Sousa v Daniel Altmaier Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between these two players.

Altmaier Knocks Out Albot
Daniel Altmaier made his way to the quarterfinal after knocking out Radu Albot in two hours and 11 minutes. The number five seed won 73% of the points on the first serve and saved an impressive seven out of 10 breakpoints.
After knocking out Prajnesh Gunneswaran in the first round in straight sets, the German sent out a strong message to the rest of the field and has done well to build on it further.
Currently ranked World No. 85, Altmaier has all the makings of being a formidable, top 30 player. Last season, he won three Challenger titles and also reached the semifinal at the ATP Kitzbuhel and Umag. On the back of these results, the 23-year-old made a significant leap in the rankings and moved up some 70 odd places.
So far in 2022, however, Altmaier hasn’t been half as impressive as he arrived in Pune on the back of opening-round exits in three Australian tournaments.

Sousa Survives Mager
Joao Sousa also found himself in a marathon match against Italy’s Gianluca Mager. The match lasted for a little over two hours and saw the Portuguese clinch the win with 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4).
It was the second consecutive slogfest for Sousa, having battled Arjun Kadhe in the opening round for three sets – two of which went to a tiebreak.
The 32-year-old hasn’t reached an ATP final since 2018. His form over the last few seasons has taken a sharp dip and consequently, he has also slipped in the rankings to exit the top 100. Like Altmaier, Sousa too had a mundane start to the year with first-round exits in Melbourne and the Australian Open.
Last year, he alternated between Challenger and ATP events. In the former, he found some success with two runner-up trophies but in the latter, he was stopped in his tracks early on in the tournament.
Altmaier v Sousa Prediction and Tip
This match can go to three sets but Altmaeir should ultimately emerge as the winner. He is in fine form and is on an upward trajectory while his opponent’s play has dipped considerably at the same time. Of course, Sousa has the experience and that may give him some edge but the lack of momentum will be difficult to compensate for.
