Fognini Returns To Favorite Spot
Fabio Fognini is always in a happy place when he returns to South America. Two of his nine career titles have been won on these shores.
The enigmatic is making his 13th appearance at the Buenos Aires tournament, 16 years on from his very first main draw appearance at the event.
Fognini was among a handful of high-profile names to pull out from last week’s Cordoba Open. It has not been disclosed what exactly caused his withdrawal, but the Italian veteran did have issues with his elbow at the Australian Open.
Fognini was stunned by Tallon Grieksppor in the first round of the year’s first Major, going down in straight sets to the Dutchman.
But his achievements in doubles have outshone those in singles in 2022, with Fognini joining forces with countryman Simone Bolelli. The pair of them would reach the quarterfinals at the Melbourne Slam. That run did come at a cost with Fognini hurting his elbow in the process.
The 34-year-old has since made his comeback in doubles at the Argentina Open. He won his first match alongside Horacio Zeballos on Monday, which bodes well for his overall fitness.

Martinez Too Good For Tabilo
Alejandro Tabilo produced an eye-catching run to the final of the Cordoba Open this past week as a qualifier and lost narrowly to Albert Ramos Vinolas in the championship match.
The Chilean was looking to emulate that feat in Buenos Aires, but resembled a marathoner who had hit a wall. Against Pedro Martinez in the first round, Tabilo lacked the guile and the power off the ground to challenge the Spaniard.
Martinez needed just an hour and 17 minutes to post his fourth win of the year and which was highly satisfying following his second-round exit in Cordoba.
The 24-year-old Spaniard had the fresher legs to outmaneuver and overpower the Chilean in baseline duels. Martinez also utilized his counterpunching skills to great effect. He broke Tabilo four times from seven opportunities, closing out a 6-2 6-4 win.
Fognini v Martinez Prediction and Tip
It remains to be seen whether Fognini has brushed off the dust and settled in singles. The oddsmakers don’t seem to agree, but we reckon the Italian has an outside chance of making things slightly more competitive against the Spaniard.
Tip: Fognini to win a set: 4/7 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
