Casper Ruud is an established top 10 player who is a known commodity of the tour. The winner of 6 ATP trophies dominates mostly on clay but his improvement on hard courts last year did not go unnoticed. The 23-year old is a future Roland Garros champion in many eyes but for now, Ruud is content taking things slowly.
He has very fond memories of Buenos Aires having won his maiden trophy here in 2020. Since then he added 5 of them and 4 were on clay. He is one of the best players on clay today and there is no question about it. Only a handful of players play better on clay and in Buenos Aires, he is looking for another trophy.
He only played a handful of matches in 2022 as an ankle injury prevented him from playing the Australian Open but he is now healthy and ready to compete. In the first round here he took down Roberto Carballes Baena in solid fashion earning himself some confidence ahead of the quarterfinal.

Coria Finding Form on Clay
Like many Argentinians, Federico Coria plays his best tennis on clay. It’s not a coincidence that he won his first match in 2022 in Buenos Aires on his favourite surface. The courts in Argentina are among the slowest in the world and that suits his play rather well. Before coming here he had played two matches and lost both.
In Melbourne, he got thrashed by Gael Monfils while in Cordoba he was bested by Juan Pablo Ficovich. In the first two rounds, he had two very close matches against Pablo Cuevas and Dusan Lajovic. The comeback win over Lajovic was a superb one and Coria demonstrated he found some of his form here.
Against Ruud it will be a very tricky matchup. They played last year in the Bastad final and Ruud won that comfortably 6-3 6-3. Maybe things will be different on Coria’s native soil.
Ruud v Coria Prediction and Tip
Both of these players enjoy playing on clay and that is very visible in their previous results on the surface. Ruud is obviously the much better player but clay is an interesting surface that allows for upsets quite often. If Coria comes out and plays a superb match he can win.
How likely that is, is another question. The difficulty in facing Ruud comes from the fact that he is usually very solid. There are not many days where Ruud is completely abysmal meaning that players not as good as him need some very inspired tennis to defeat him.
Coria did it twice so far but those wins came a long time ago when Ruud did not peak yet. Their most recent match last year demonstrated that Ruud, even when not playing his best, is still better than Coria. That is why I see this as another comfortable win for the Norwegian. He already won this event two years ago so he knows the courts well.
