This has been a dream week for Mackenzie McDonald who was staring at a potential major scalp. But the second seed Andrey Rublev produced a back-to-the-wall display to end the American’s stay in Dubai.
Rublev had dropped the first set, barely showing any interest in the contest as McDonald ran riot. And he came close to falling behind in the second set. He needed to stave off three break points which proved to be a major turning point in the match.
In a lengthy fifth game in the second set, Rublev got the break he needed, and there was a different feel to his ground strokes from that point. McDonald would win just two more games as the Russian grabbed the match by the scruff of its neck tallying 73% first-serve points in total.
The World No. 7 remains on course to win his second title in as many weeks after last weekend’s triumph in Marseille. But he will need to defeat Hubert Hurkacz for the first time in their rivalry.

Hurkacz Defeats Good Friend Sinner
There was no case of sentimentality from Hubert Hurkacz towards his good friend Jannik Sinner. the pair were doubles partners in the Dubai doubles draw. But their quarterfinal meeting on Thursday brought the two men to opposite territories.
Hurkacz advanced into his first tour-level semifinal after shutting the gates on Sinner, winning rather routinely in the end, 6-3 6-3, in an hour and 25 minutes.
The Polish World No. 11 did not flinch nor was he overwhelmed by Sinner’s power from the baseline. Instead, he gave the Italian a dose of his own medicine at times, firing a barrage of winners from his forehand. Hurkacz’s serve also worked to perfection, winning 23 of 28 first-serve points.
Now a much tougher test awaits Hurkacz in the form of second seed Andrey Rublev. Can he advance into his first final of the season?

Hurkacz’s belief has been growing with every match win this week. Rublev, on the other hand, continues to show lapses in concentration. The Russian deserved a week off after his Marseille exploits, and I think he will pay a price for his hectic scheduling in this one.
