What Happened at the 2020 ATP Dubai Tennis Championships?

Novak Djokovic won the 2020 edition of the ATP Dubai by beating the second seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in the final.

The top seeded Serb was up against it in the semifinal when he was down a set and was taken to a tie-breaker in the second by Gael Monfils, which he managed to eke out 10-8. Tsitsipas overcame Dan Evans in his semifinal.

Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov also made it to the quarterfinals while Fabio Fognini and Roberto Bautista-Agut were knocked out in the opening round.

Roger Federer, seeded second in the competition, clinched the 2019 title by beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final in straight sets. This win came on the back of Tsitsipas having shocked the Swiss legend at the Australian Open.

It wasn’t plain sailing for Federer, who needed three sets in each of his first two rounds against Philipp Kohlschreiber and Fernando Verdasco, before he defeated Marton Fucsovics and Borna Coric with ease in the next two rounds to make it to the final. Tsitsipas did not face a single seeded player till he made it to the final but had his own challenges at different times in the tournament, winning three of the matches in three sets.

Marin Cilic, Karen Khachanov, Milos Raonic and Daniil Medvedev were some of the other seeded players who crashed out in the first round itself while top seeded Kei Nishikori only made it to the second.

The 2018 edition of the ATP Dubai Open was won by Roberto Bautista Agut, who defeated Lucas Pouille in the final in straight sets. With that win, Agut also lifted the most important trophy of his career. In fact, in many ways, that win propelled him to glory on the ATP Tour.

The tournament was highlighted by the absence of big names like Federer, Murray, and Djokovic. At the same time, their absence gave a good chance to the emerging players to join the fray and make a name for themselves.

Grigor Dimitrov started as the top seed but lost in the first round itself to Malek Jaziri – the Tunisian wildcard who reached as far as the semifinal. Fifth seed Richard Gasquet also incurred a similar loss to Borna Coric in the first round. Apart from these players, Karen Khachanov also had a chance to rise to the occasion but lost in the second round to Pouille.

Filip Krajinovic ended up having a surprisingly good run and reached the semifinal. Once again, it was Pouille here who downed the hopes of the Serbian.
