What Happened at the 2018 ATP Quito?
The 2018 Ecuador Open was the last edition of the tournament before it was moved to be the second most populous city of Argentina. The top eight seeds in Quito enjoyed a direct bye into the second round. However, the second seed Albert Ramos Vinolas was the only seeded player who made it to the semifinals.
The likes of Gael Monfils, Pablo Carreno Busta, and the three-time defending champion Victor Estrella Burgos succumbed rather early in the tournament.
In the end, it was the Spanish qualifier Roberto Carballes Baena who, against all odds, made his way to the final where he defeated his compatriot Vinolas to lift first and only singles title on the ATP circuit. The final was a three-set affair where the second seed put up a good fight although, it was Baena’s match to lose right from the beginning.
