She was once ranked 26th in the world but Karolina Schmiedlova’s form has fallen away in recent times and despite winning the WTA Belgrade title last season, she is now 91st on the WTA charts.
And it’s been a struggle this season too for Schmiedlova. Starting out with three back to back first round losses in 2022, it was only when she reached Guadalajara in the last week of February that she saw her first main draw win of the year.
Schmiedlova overcame Nuria Parrizas-Diaz and Anastasia Potapova in the first two rounds of that competition before going down to Jelena Ostapenko in the last eight.
Leylah Fernandez relegated her to a 6-2, 6-2 loss in the first round in Monterrey soon after that and while she did win a couple of rounds in Marbella last week, it will be interesting to see if she can turn things around on a more consistent basis here.

Lizarazo Found More Regularly on the ITF Tour
Having never broken into the top 300, Lizarazo has 10 singles titles on the ITF circuit but has never quite been able to make it big on the WTA tour.
In fact, underlining this is the fact Lizarazo last played in the main draw of a WTA event in 2016 and it came at this very competition where she was given a wild-card to participate.
Lizarazo had gone down in the first round of that tournament and never featured again on the WTA tour.
This season, Lizarazo has been a part of five ITF tournaments and won two successive matches in a couple of them as her best performances. Up against Schmiedlova, she will need to pull out a proverbial rabbit out of the hat to cause any kerfuffle.
