Joao Sousa v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

The pair have never played each before. This will be the first match between the 33-year old Portuguese, and the Brazilian, who is six years younger.

Pune Winner Sousa

Sousa won his fourth career title in Pune in February, defeating the Finn Emil Ruusuvouri in the final.

Given that he was brought up on the surface and has enjoyed success on it on the Challenger tour, it is perhaps surprising that only one of those previous triumphs came on clay.

Since India he has been struggling for form, lost in the first round in Indian Wells, and failed to qualify for Miami.

Back on clay he reached the second round in Marrakesh, but, last week in Monte Carlo, he failed to progress out of the qualifying competition.

Brazilian Number One Monteiro

Like all South American players, clay is bread and butter for the Brazilian number one Monteiro, and he has appeared in 11 Challenger finals on the surface, winning six of them, his most recent triumph coming in Braga, Portugal last September.

Having reached the quarter-final in Adelaide at the start of the year, he had to wait until Santiago two months later before reaching that stage again.

Like Sousa he failed to qualify for Miami and turned back to the Challenger tour to try and find some form again, reaching his first semi-final of the year at an event in Madrid.

Forced to enter the qualifying competition in Belgrade, he battled past Giulio Zeppieri of Italy and Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia, although he needed three sets to do so each time.

Sousa v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

Although Sousa is the higher ranked player, he has been struggling since Pune, whilst Monteiro appears to have played himself into some form..
