Dominic Thiem v Hugo Gaston Head to Head

The pair have played each other before, at the French Open in 2020, Thiem winning their round of 16 match in four sets.

Gaston Beaten Finalist Last Year

Last year, Gaston reached his first senior ATP final in Gstaad, only to go down in straight sets to Casper Ruud.

Later that year he would reach his first Masters quarter-final in Paris and also qualified for the season-ending NextGen ATP Finals.

There has been nothing quite so noteworthy to add to his CV in 2022 so far, although he did make the third round of the French Open, his best showing in a Grand Slam to date.

The highlight of his grass season was his last eight appearance in Rosmalen, and last week, he entered the tournament in Bastad, where he reached the second round before losing to Aslan Karatsev in straight sets.

Thiem Back on the Comeback Trail

The US Open winner two years ago, and three times a Grand Slam finalist, Thiem appeared at one stage to be the man most likely to challenge the dominance of the Big Three – Djokovic, Nadal and Federer.

But that was before the string of injuries that have since dogged his career, and seen him tumble out of the top 300 in the world.

Bastad may have offered him what may the light of a very dark tunnel. He recorded his first victory there at any level for 14 months by defeating Emil Ruusuvouri in the first round and he followed that up by defeating Roberto Batuista-Agut.

Sebastian Baez halted his progress at the quarter-final stage.

Gaston v Thiem Prediction and Tip

If Thiem can show that what he achieved in Bastad was more than a flash in the pan and may be the signal of a retrun of his old form, then he could overcome a man who he beat in their previous meeting.
