Huesler Has Two Challenger Titles on Clay This Year

Marc-Andrea Huesler has not featured in many tour-level events this year, but will begin his Gstaad campaign at home with a 1-3 season record on the tour.

After qualifying for the main draw at the Halle Open and Wimbledon, he fell in the opening rounds of both the tournaments. But last week he got his first main draw win of the season when he defeated Holger Rune in straight sets of the Swedish Open campaign.

Huesler had qualified for the main draw in Bastad with wins over Sweden’s Leo Borg and Fabio Fognini.

Ranked no. 108th in the world, Huesler received a wild card in Gstaad. He has won just one match in his three previous appearances in the tournament.

While he hasn’t played much at the top level this year, the 26-year-old has done well in lower level tournaments, winning two Challenger titles, both on clay, in Mexico city and Aguascalientes in April. Four of his five Challenger titles have come on clay and he will look to improve on his 4-5 our-level clay court record on Monday.

Facing Huesler will be another Swiss wild card, 19-year-old Dominic Stricker.

The World no. 187 won his only tour-level match of the season against Maxime Cressy in Stuttgart. He has lost the other two main draw matches that he featured in this year.

Stricker, along with his opening round opponent, had won the doubles title in Gstaad last year, which remains the only tour-level title for both players. They will partnering once again this year in hopes of defending the title.

This year, Stricker has featured in two ITF singles finals, finishing runner-up in Columbus and winning the title in Cleveland to claim his second career ITF title.

Stricker doesn’t have a lot of clay experience and is 2-6 this season on the surface from all levels. In contrast, Huesler has a 16-4 record on the surface this year.
