Sonego Seeking For Season Changing Form
Sonego returns to Gstaad having played here only once in his career in 2019. He lost to Thomas Fabbiano in the second round after receiving a bye in the first round.
The Italian took part in the Bastad Open last week and faced a first round exit to Aslan Karatsev. He has had a very average clay season with a 8-9 record this year.
Sonego is a very gritty player who always performs better on bigger stages. He has reached the third round of all the Grand Slams this year.
However the Italian has been unable to find any deep runs in any other tournament and his ranking has been dropping gradually. He is currently ranked 60 in the world, 39 places below his career high ranking.
Sonego will use this ATP 250 tournament to find confidence so as to prepare for the upcoming North American swing.

Varillas Debuts in Gstaad Main Draw
Juan Pablo Varillas will be making his debut in the main draw of the Gstaad open when he faces Sonego. He came through the qualifying round and did not drop a set in both the matches.
Varillas faced Andrea Vavassori and Pavel Kotov in the qualifiers and won comfortably in both matches.
The Peruvian has been dominating the challenger circuit for more than 18 months now but has been unable to seal his place into the top 100. Having seen players like Francisco Cerundolo and Sebastian Baez make that jump, he is very close to doing so.
Varillas is a clay court specialist and is 24-13 on the surface this season. Last year he won 49 matches on clay, mainly at the challenger level. He is currently ranked 115 in the world.
Sonego v Varillas Prediction and Tip
Varillas came through an impressive run in the qualifiers but faces a tough draw as Sonego is high quality player who always plays with 100% effort and won’t take this ATP 250 tournament lightly. Sonego should win in a tough battle.
Tip: Sonego to win: 4/7 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
