Sara Errani v Kateryna Baindl Head to Head

Errani has won both their previous meetings. While the first was back in 2017, her most recent win over Baindl came in the WTA 125 quarterfinal in Gaiba last month, where the Italian finished runner-up.

Errani Edges Rus in Dramatic Opener

After winning both her qualifying rounds, Sara Errani continued her march at the Poland Open, defeating Arantxa Rus in three and advancing to the second round.

The Italian, ranked No. 127th in the world, faced some stubborn resistance from the World No. 75, before edging past the Dutch in a two hour and 30 minute contest.

In a match that swung from one end to the other, Errani made a fast start, breaking Rus thrice and sealing the first set without much trouble. Rus fought back in the second. While Errani came back from a break down thrice, she couldn’t find a way to cancel out Rus’ fourth break in the second set.

In the decider, Errani was once again off to a flying start, building a 5-0 lead thanks to a double break. But the dramatic contest was far from over as Rus hit back, winning four games in a row and forcing her way back into the contest. But the 35-year-old former No. 5 had other ideas and she broke again in the 10th game to seal the contest 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.

The win follows her qualifying round wins over Spain’s Andrea Lazaro Garcia and Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea.

Errani, who won a WTA 125 in Contrexeville, France, last month, improved her record to 19-19 from all competitions. She will now be looking to reach a first tour-level quarterfinal since Hamburg last year.

Baindl Knocks Out Zanevska

Facing Errani in the second round will be lucky loser Kateryna Baindl, who handed 11th seed Maryna Zanevska a straight sets drubbing in the opening round.

Baindl, who featured in the final of ITF Montpellier earlier this month, needed an hour and 35 minutes to knock out the Belgian 6-3, 6-3.

The 28-year-old, ranked No. 190 in the world, converted 5 of 9 break points and saved half of the four that she faced to take down the World no. 99.

Baindl had won her first qualifying round against Yuliya Hatouka 6-4, 6-3, but she lost her second qualifying round despite winning the first set against the Czech Republic’s Jesika Malečková. However, having made it to the main draw as lucky loser, Baindl looked in great touch in the first round. Can she keep the rhythm going in the next round.
