Many have called Fognini a player past his prime this year as he struggled with consistency since the beginning. His poor form on clay was particularly striking and he himself admitted that he’s getting closer to retirement. Well, he’s found some form on the hard courts of North America.
It came rather unexpectedly but it probably has to do with the fact that he had to play some qualifiers. A couple of solid wins, especially in Cincinnati should make him feel comfortable when he starts his Winston-Salem journey.
The draw was a solid one and he got a player in round that he can certainly beat. He probably won’t beat Jack Draper in round two but just getting one more match in before heading off to New York could be useful. He’s 19-19 on the year after being 13-17 before this part of the season.
Overall Fognini might be playing one of his last years of his career but he’ll certainly try to do his best both here and in New York.

Lajovic Avoiding Hard Courts
Dusan Lajovic did not play in Montreal but he did come to Cincinnati where he had to play the qualifiers in order to get in. He didn’t get it because Lorenzo Musetti proved better. Lajovic is not fond of playing on hard courts and does not have to look far to understand why.
His record is 4-9, quite poor but he’s never been that comfortable on them anyway. He likes clay and he does his best on that surface. Overall, this year has been quite poor for him despite some really solid wins on the red dirt. I don’t think Lajovic will fancy his chances too much in this matchup.
I don’t think that will change when he gets to New York. It’s a part of the year that he will endure because he has no other choice. It wasn’t always like this as he had winning seasons on hard courts before but over the year he simply stayed away from the surface and his level on it dropped.

With improved play in the last two weeks I see no reason why Fognini would not win this match. He’s been pretty good.
