Jaume Munar v Yosuke Watanuki Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and that came at the Winston-Salem Open last season. Surprisingly, it was Watanuki who came through that opening round match in three sets.

Munar on a Three-Match Losing Streak

Munar loves his time on clay but elsewhere his performances have left a lot to desire. Take the example of more recent times when the Spaniard finished up his grass court swing with two defeats from three matches and immediately moved to featuring in clay court competitions.

A quarterfinal in Gstaad and a second round appearance at Umag followed – and he has done better than that too through the rest of the clay court season – but ever since, has gone back to his struggling times.

Munar managed to qualify for the Cincinnati Masters but stumbled in the very first round, won a round at Winston-Salem before losing his openers at both, the US Open and Moselle Open last week.

He now faces a player whose career-best ranking is 171st in the world but that, by itself, is no assurance that Munar will be able to break his three-match losing streak.

Watanuki Makes a Rare Main Draw

For a player who has featured in only 14 main draw matches on the ATP level, this is a rare chance to make the first round with Watanuki needing to win both his qualifiers to get there.

Six of these matches have come this year and the Japanese player has won three of them including a quarterfinal appearance at the Lyon Open.

More recently he did qualify for the Washington Open too but was sent packing by Kyle Edmund – who himself has been out of on-court action for a bit. Since then Watanuki has featured in four Challenger tournaments and barring a quarterfinal appearance in Thailand earlier this month, hasn’t done much of note.

Can he suddenly up his game against the Spaniard?

Munar v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

It’s a clash between two players struggling to get going and Munar holds the edge. We think this match could see a third set.
