Nishioka Takes Out Fifth Seed

Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka took down fifth seed Daniel Evans in the first round of the Korea Open on Tuesday.

The World no. 56 was on top of his game in the first set, and he broke Evans twice to take a one-set lead. The Briton put up a fight in the second set, coming back from a break down twice and saving a match point in the 12th game to force the tiebreak. But eventually it was the Japanese who dominated the tiebreak and took the contest 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

A finalist at the ATP 500 in Washington, the left-handed Nishioka improved to 12-13 on the tour. He was also a quarterfinalist in Acapulco and reached two Challenger finals, winning in Columbus and finishing runner-up in Cleveland.

A win on Thursday will take Nishioka into his third tour-level quarterfinal of the season.

Daniel Downs Gomez

Taro Daniel needed an hour and 42 minutes to dispatch Ecuador’s Emilio Gómez in the opening round on Wednesday.

The Japanese won 86% points on the back of his first serve but he could get just 50% of his first serves in. He had a healthy 61% conversion on the second serve as well.

The 29-year-old raced to a 5-1 lead in the first set, before Gomez won three games in a row to make things interesting. Daniel, however, prevented the Ecuadorian from winning four in a row as he served out the first set.

In the second, Daniel got a break early and then held on to the lead for a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

A quarterfinalist in Belgrade this year, Daniel is 11-16 on the tour. Can he reach the last eight for the second time this season?
