Shuai Zhang v Donna Vekic Head to Head

Zhang leads by 4-1, last beating the Croat in three sets in the 2017 WTA Wuhan Open.

Zhang Survives Kuzmova

Shuai Zhang was in a fierce clash with Viktoria Kuzmova in the first round, beating her 7-6(4), 7-6(10) in an hour and 50 minutes. It was a tight match where Kuzmova gave her very best, but Zhang’s superior experience and pedigree got her through.

The 33-year-old Chinese has had a good season so far; she is now 35-24 and has picked up close to $1.5 million in prize money. What’s more impressive is her consistency, having reached the late stages in three of her last four events.

Zhang last played in the WTA Tokyo, where she was a semifinalist after beating Caroline Garcia and Petra Martic. Similarly, she made it to the quarters in Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Nottingham.

Apart from this, Shuai has four WTA doubles finals (including the Wimbledon) and two in the singles department.

Vekic Moves Past Nuudi

Donna Vekic made quick work of the Estonian wildcard Maileen Nuudi, beating her 6-2, 6-0.

That win marks her first tour-level main-draw win since the Citi Open, where she beat Mayar Sherif in the opener before losing to Xiyu Wang next. Since then, Vekic lost in Cincinnati Open, US Open, and Slovenia Open in the first round.

Now ranking World No. 85, the 26-year-old hasn’t been in that great of a form – possibly due to her surgery. While Donna hasn’t quite been the same, there are signs that she is trying. In the French Open, she made it to round two as a qualifier; in Birmingham, she was a quarterfinalist.

As a former #19 and nine career singles finals on the WTA Tour, Vekic has got what it takes to beat Zhang. Her fitness, however, is an entirely different story.

Zhang v Vekic Prediction and Tip

The match can go either way, but Zhang is the odds-on favourite. Expect a close affair with plenty of games in the offing.
