Paolini Battles Past Wang

Jasmine Paolini fought off seventh seed Xiyu Wang in a two-hour-and-30-minute semifinal to reach the second WTA final of her career.

The 26-year-old Italian had won her only final in Portoroz last year.

After winning a tough opening set on Saturday, Paolini lost an equally hard fought second, with Wang getting the solitary break of the set to draw level.

In the deciding set, the Chinese player came back from a break down twice, but Paolini went up a break for a third time in the eighth game and then served out the match in the next to win 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

A semifinalist in Palermo and Warsaw this year, Paolini will feature in her maiden final of the season. She had started the tournament with a come-from-behind win over Marta Kostyuk, defeating the Ukrainian 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. That win was followed by two straight set victories over Dayana Yastremska in the second round and Jule Niemeier in the quartefinals.

The world no. 78 has had a decent run this season, can she make it even better with a title on Sunday?

Blinkova’s Unexpected Run Continues

Anna Blinkova’s unexpected run in the tournament continued as the Russian qualifier reached her maiden tour-level final.

In what’s been an extraordinary week for the World no. 138, Blinkova scored her sixth consecutive win on Saturday, battling past fourth seed and fellow Russian Anastasia Potapova in a two and a half hour semifinal.

In an up-and-down contest, Blinkova had raced to a 5-1 lead in the first set, but she squandered three set points and lost six consecutive games to concede the opening set. She started the second set well as well, taking a 4-1 lead, but Potapova got the break back to send the set back on serve, but the qualifier broke again immediately to take tie the match at one-set all.

There was more drama in the final set with Blinkova going up a break twice and Potapova cancelling out both of them. But the lower-ranked player had the last laugh, breaking for a third time and sealing the contest 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

This was Blinkova’s third straight three-set win in the competition and a second comeback win in a row. She had rallied from a set down to beat Anhelina Kalinina in the quarterfinals.

After beating Lesia Tsurenko and Mirjam Bjorklund in straight sets in the qualifying rounds, Blinkova had defeated Anastasia Zakharova in the first round and China’s Wang Xinyu in a three-set second round.

Can she become a surprise winner on Sunday?

Paolini v Blinkova Prediction and Tip

Paolini will be banking on her experience. She has been in decent form throughout the year and is the favourite. Blinkova on the other hand can’t be taken lightly. She has had a stunning run in the tournament and will look to beat another top 100 player on Sunday. Expect another close three-setter with Paolini edging through.
