Wang In as Lucky Loser

World no. 86 Xinyu Wang has made it to the main draw in Hobart as a lucky loser.

The Chinese player, who was beaten by Sofia Kenin in straight sets in Auckland, has had a tough start to the season.

The 21-year-old did win against Australia’s Lily Taylor in the first qualifying round on Saturday, but she was beaten in straight sets by Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

While Wang saved a set point and showed solid resistance in the first set, she was blown away in the second by Parrizas-Diaz, who took the contest 7-6, 6-1.

The Spaniard had also beaten Wang in her maiden WTA 125 final in Columbus last year.

Overall, Wang had a 31-27 record last year, but found little success in outdoor hard courts, finishing the year with a 7-13 record. At the ITF level, she reached four finals in 2022, winning two of them.

She also won her first Grand Slam match last year at the Australian Open and  managed to reach a career high of no. 68. She fell out of the top 100 in the later half of the season but climbed back the rankings at the back end of the season.

She will be hoping to be more consistent this year.

Gadecki Looking to Make an Impression

A part of the Australian squad at the United Cup, Olivia Gadecki got a chance to play against Spain in a tie which had little significance after Great Britain had already qualified. The world no. 202, however, didn’t find much success in her singles match as she went down to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-2, 6-2.

A two-time winner on the ITF circuit, Gadecki reached three ITF finals last year, but couldn’t add to the two that she won in 2021.

Gadecki found plenty of success at the lower level last year, reaching at least the quarterfinals in her final six tournaments of the season.

The 20-year-old right-hander, who broke into the top 200 last year, reached a career-high of no. 156 in July.

Currently ranked no. 202, Gadecki is yet to play in a major. She lacks the experience of playing at the top level on the tour, but will be looking to make an impression in Hobart. While reaching the second round will be a bonus her main aim will be to put up a strong showing in the first round.

Wang v Gadecki Prediction and Tip

Wang’s experience gives her an edge over Gadecki. Expect the Chinese player to sail through.
